The last stop in Colorado was Steamboat Springs. Just like Aspen, it is an upscale town but has a western flair to it. Founded in 1900, Steamboat Springs is a thriving, authentic city with its roots deeply planted in the American West. At 6,700 feet in the Rocky Mountains, this northwest Colorado community is home to year-round recreation, a historic downtown, celebrated mineral springs and an 80-year Olympian tradition.
The free-flowing Yampa River runs right through the heart of Steamboat Springs and our campground. It was a common site to see tubers on this river.

The annual Tour De Steamboat cycling event was taking place while we were there. We checked out the registration and at $160 per person we opted out. We did three great rides in Steamboat, two with gravel and one completely on the road. The routes were on quiet paved and gravel back roads. We knew we were in the right place when we saw the locals on the same roads. It’s a win!

We had a great surprise when Tanya Conover, a neighbor and cycling friend from Ocala, dropped into Steamboat Springs on her 11- day whirlwind tour of Colorado. The three of us did a walking tour of downtown, Tanya bought a “pink” cowboy hat and we watched the local rodeo. A wonderful evening!

Next Laramie, Wyoming and then Custer, South Dakota.
