900 Miles From Ocala

Five days into our trip has us in Canton, Texas .. 900 miles from Ocala. We traveled to Robertsdale, Alabama and Vicksburg Mississippi, both places we have been before, enroute to Canton. We endured the heat and humidity, thunderstorms, heavy rains, tornado and hail warnings!

While in Vicksburg we enjoyed tamales from the famous Sollys Tamales and did a walk at the Grand Gulf Military Park near Port Gibson, Mississippi.

This park is on the Mississippi River and is where fierce fighting took place during the later stage of the Civil War. Grand Gulf was a community incorporated in 1833 and was a shipping point for moving cotton for the town of Port Gibson, which was located inland. In 1854 the town had almost 1000 citizens, but declined as the Civil War ended and the Mississippi River slowly shifted westward and the town became landlocked. By 1900 the population was 150.

Today Grand Gulf is the location of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and it is the largest single-unit nuclear plant in the US and fifth largest in the world.

Our next stop was Canton, Texas. A short drive from Canton is Purtis State Park. This park has a 355-acre lake designed for bass fishing and six miles of hiking trails. We hiked the Wolfpen Trail which is an upland forest of various oak trees that provided loads of shade!

The weather in central Texas this time of year is hot, humid, with hail and rain storms. We were within 10 miles of a tornado one evening and had a few worrisome hours as the storm passed southeast of our campground in Canton. All is good.

0ur Campground was in Van Zandt county

Next up Colorado and cool weather!
